VIII.3. THOMAS S. KUHN

I would like to join those of our colleagues who pay tribute to
Thomas Kuhn. In the face of death, we all are sad; in the fact
of life, we still have hope.
In this tribute, I would like to make two points.
The first is an endorsement of the comment made by our good
colleague, Mort Wenger. There is a political economy in which
the philosophy of science is writ. In the case of Kuhn, it was
as Wenger said, in a time of great social upheaval in which the
verities of the past fell before the realities of the present. If I may expand upon the Wenger thesis a bit, I would point out that the advent of industrial capitalism and its great quest for sure and certain knowledge about metals, workers, soldiers and consumers which gave rise to both Stephen Hawking [as a result of the navigational need to study the stars and to know the heavens].

Program/Project Management Resource List #50
Revised September 1994 Provided by the NASA Headquarters Library The modern study of paradigms began in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas Kuhn in 1962 and has been continued in the books and videos of Joel Barker. A paradigm, according to Barker, is theory or dogma that establishes boundaries and regulations. Paradigms filter data and, as a result, often prevent anticipating new developments that come from outside the paradigm. "What today is impossible to do in your business, but if it could be done would fundamentally change what you do?" asks Joel Barker. This is crucial to understand because of Barker's "going back to Zero Rule": When a paradigm shifts everyone goes back to zero, your past success guarantees nothing. The Swiss invented the quartz movement watch, yet their paradigm for what a watch should be caused them to reject the new design. As a result, their market share fell from 80% in 1968 to less than 10% today. Their past success blinded them to the future of watch-making. Barker's books and videos explore many examples of the paradigm effect, including the airplane, telephone, radio, and xerox machine. These ideas were developed by people who were open to new concepts and new ways of looking at the world. As Joel Barker says in the conclusion to his video

not specified Course Description Where does “knowledge” in the sciences come from, and under what circumstances does it grow? Some forty years ago, philosopher of science Thomas S. Kuhn suggested a new model describing the generation of knowledge in the sciences: In his famous book “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,” Kuhn suggested that scientific knowledge did not grow cumulatively over the centuries, as many had believed before (and some still do). According to Kuhn, the history of any scientific subject often followed a rather unsteady path, on which periods of “normal (cumulative) science” alternated with periods of dramatic “scientific revolutions” or “paradigm shifts.” During these revolutions, the respective sciences were usually shaken to their foundations, culminating in the appearance of a completely new mode of thinking (e.g., the Copernican Revolution).
Still today, Kuhn’s thesis is hotly debated among scientists, historians and philosophers. In this University Studies Course, we will (1) take a close look at Kuhn’s original thesis and his model of knowledge generation, (2) embark on a few case studies of progress and innovation in physics (and possibly other fields) in order to check the validity of Kuhn’s model, (3) discuss some central positions in the controversies about Kuhn. This seminal book has certainly provoked a profound change in the debate about the history of sciences. In fact, some would argue that the book itself has produced a paradigm shift in its field.

The first edition of this book was published in 1962, within a month or so of my graduation from college in physics. It took me about 15 years to locate this book and about 15 minutes to realize how important it was to me as a scientist. Kuhn explained to me things that had puzzled me from the time that I outgrew my textbooks in physics and the other sciences. How was it that the major innovators in the sciences, men like Galileo, Newton, Dalton, and Einstein, were able to create their new ideas about the physical world? The textbooks made their discoveries sound so simple and logical that their discoveries seemed to be easily deducible from the state of science as they found it in their time. And yet their discoveries were amazing. How does one reconcile these two contradictory ideas? Kuhn laid it out for me like a "patient etherized on a table" readily available for inspection. By the time I began to read Kuhn, I had studied the Gestalt psychologists who pointed out how we can look at the drawing of stacked cubes such as the ones on the book cover above and see a particular cube as coming out from the page or going into the page. I had read Benjamin Whorf's hypothesis and speculations about the effects of language on one's world view. Also I had encountered the story of Bruner and Postman's experimental results with the "red six of spades and black four of hearts" stuck into a deck of otherwise normal cards. Kuhn built upon these and other ideas to create the idea of a "paradigm" which represents an exemplar of a key experiment in science like Galileo's dropping of a heavy and light weight from the Tower of Pisa to demonstrate that they both fell at the same rate of speed or Michelson-Morley experiment that established the non-existence of a material ether through which light travels. This was one of meanings Kuhn used for paradigm.

Prefazione
