The objective of the DFG's Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz programme is to improve working conditions for outstanding scientists, to increase their research opportunities, to free them from administrative obligations, and to enable them to hire particularly well-qualified young scientists. The "Awards for German Scientists" granted under the Leibniz programme are endowed with up to Euro 1,55 m, a sum available to each prize winner over a period of five years. In using these funds the prize winners have a high degree of freedom. The Leibniz Programme was established in 1986.

Philosophy
Leibniz's philosophy is a consistent rationalism. The universe forms one context in which each occurrence can be seen in relation to every other. Since the universe is the result of a divine plan, Leibniz calls it the best of all possible worlds; for this he was satirized by Voltaire in Candide. Leibniz's assertion, however, does not imply an unqualified optimism, since evil is a necessary ingredient in even the best of all possible worlds. The ultimate constituents of the universe, in his view, are monads or simple substances, each of which represents the universe from a different point of view. Being simple, monads are immaterial and thus cannot act. Apparent interaction is explained in terms of the principle of preestablished harmony. With the decline of interest in metaphysics in contemporary philosophy, recent studies have tended to emphasize Leibniz's significance in mathematics and logic. However, Leibniz's metaphysics have not been neglected but rather reinterpreted in light of his mathematical and logical works. Sections in this article:

LEIBNIZ: AN OVERVIEW German mathematician and rationalist philosopherwho, simultaneously with Newton, invented the differential and integral calculus. He was a widely talented and travelled individual in his early manhoodand kept up friendships and correspondences with a wide range of scientists, philosophers and political figures of the day.
HIS LIFE AND WORKS Leibniz was born and raised in Leipzig, Germany, son of Friedrich Leibnuetz, Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Leipzig (who died in 1652 when Leibniz was only 6). At an early age Leibniz taught himself Latin and studied extensively from his father's library. At the age of 15 entered the university of Leipzing, studying philosophy and mathematics. He graduated in 1663 with a thesis on the principle of indivuation ( Disputatio metaphysica de principio individui )a work which early pointed to the future directions his thoughts would take him.

The association works predominantly as a partner to universities, business and policy makers in an area of research between basic science and applications on an international level. Particular strengths of the association are the variety of its institutes and its work on current relevant research in a broad and interdisciplinary manner. The association is structured thus: - Liberal arts and educational research - Economics, social sciences, regional infrastructure research - Life sciences - Mathematics, natural sciences, engineering - Environmental sciences The Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Association of German Research Institutes sees itself as a bridge between traditional research and customer oriented breakthroughs. Many of the association's institutes were founded to solve specific social demands.

Name:
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Dates:
Born: June 21, 1646 in Leipzig, Germany Died: November 14, 1716 in Hannover Biography: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a German philosopher and jurist who became known for his theodicy, arguing that this world is the best of all possible worlds which God could have created. This resulted in a number of parodies by skeptical philosophers, the most famous of which was contained in the book Candide by Voltaire Leibniz operated from the premise that philosophy and theology were incapable of contradiction. Nevertheless, the existence of evil seemed incompatible with the existence of an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God. Therefore, he concluded, the existence of some evil was necessary in any world where there also existed imperfect creatures. He also argued that reality is composed of an infinite number of "monads," immaterial and indivisible substances of which no two are exactly alike. He thought that they were conscious sources of spiritual energy which, to varying degrees, mirror the universe. However, although all monads may be conscious, only some monads are self-conscious.

Important Philosophical Works
Most of Leibniz's philosophical writings are occasional pieces, addressed to various people. The two published in his lifetime were (1710) and Monadology (1714). It was largely these works that influenced Christian von Wolff , whose popularization of the Leibnizian system became the standard academic philosophy in 18th-century Germany. Leibniz's major philosophical work, Nouveaux Essais sur l'entendement humain (1704), contains the views of Leibniz on points raised in Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding. Because of Locke's death, however, it was not published until 1765. The publication of Nouveaux Essais Kant and the whole German Enlightenment. Sections in this article:

Leibniz, Gottfried (1646-1716)

German philosopher, physicist, and mathematician whose mechanical studies included forces and weights. He believed in a deterministic universe which followed a "pre-established harmony." He extended the work of his mentor Huygens from kinematics to include dynamics He was self-taught in mathematics, but nonetheless developed calculus independently of Newton . Although he published his results slightly after Newton , his notation was by far superior (including the integral sign and derivative notation), and is still in use today. It is unfortunate that continental and English mathematicians remained embroiled for decades in a heated and pointless priority dispute over the discovery of calculus Leibniz made many contributions to the study of differential equations discovering the method of separation of variables reduction of homogeneous equations to separable ones, and the procedure for solving first order linear equations. He used the idea of the determinant 50 years before Cramer , and did work on the multinomial theorem Leibniz combined the Scala Naturae with his plenum (continuous) view of nature, and called the result the Law of Continuity. He believed that it was not possible to put organisms into discrete categories, stating "Natura non facit saltus" (Nature does nothing in leaps).
