Readings in Natural Law Natural law, or right reason , rests on the self-evident truths of fundamental goods and supposes that human action can be directed toward what is morally right by practical reason. According to Aquinas, "Good is the first thing that falls under the apprehension of the practical reason, which is directed to action: since every agent acts for an end under the aspect of good. Consequently the first principle in the practical reason is one founded on the notion of good." Summa Theologiae Below are selected readings exploring the truths and application of natural law.

Alasdair MacIntyre on Practices The concept of “practices” employed to link the courses in this core proposal is patterned upon the notion developed by the philosopher, Alasdair MacIntyre. By “practices,” MacIntyre has in mind not just anything some one does, but an organized set of activities requiring certain skills and virtues. This is an ethics-centered approach, but one which rescues ethics from the narrow circle of private moral decision-making about ethical quandaries. Instead, in an integrative way, it seeks to locate the development of ethical qualities in the activities central to professional life. The following is a brief review of how MacIntyre describes practices, and then an explanation of how a form of this concept could provide a unifying theme for our curriculum. MACINTYRE’S CONCEPT OF VIRTUES, PRACTICES, NARRATIVES AND TRADITIONS Alasdair MacIntyre, in After Virtue (U. of Notre Dame Press, 1981) seeks to root the moral virtues in the larger context of three related notions: practices , the narrative order of a human life, and the concept of a

    Alasdair MacIntyre on Reformation Ethics
Richard J. Mouw (Fuller Theological Seminary)
In his impressive account of the development of the modern conception of selfhood, Alasdair MacIntyre argues that the Protestant Reformers played an important role in paving the way for secular ethics. This essay challenges MacIntyre's historical narrative on this point. His treatment of the views of Luther and Calvin is critically examined, and it is argued that the Reformational viewpoint offers an alternative to both the classical-medievalist perspective, which MacIntyre endorses, and the modern conception, which he rejects. The Reformers' insistence that the human self stands inescapably before God, and must assess all other role-options from that standpoint, is commended as being worthy of contemporary consideration. A Short History of Ethics
A Short History of Ethics A Short History of Ethics has over the past thirty years become a key philosophical contribution to studies on morality and ethics. Alasdair MacIntyre writes a new preface for this second edition which looks at the book 'thirty years on' and considers its impact. A Short History of Ethics guides the reader through the history of moral philosophy from the Greeks to contemporary times. MacIntyre emphasises the importance of a historical context to moral concepts and ideas. We see the relevance of philosophical queries on moral concepts and we come to understand the importance of a historical account of ethics.
A Short History of Ethics is an important contribution written by one of the most important living philosophers. Ideal for all philosophy students interested in ethics and morality.

The aim This course is intended to provide an introduction to contemporary Anglo-American analytical political philosophy. However, due to the time constraints it is not possible to do this in a comprehensive way. Therefore the course covers a selection of issues in the given field. The topics have been chosen to fit the general theme of this course which is: ‘How can political philosophy respond to continuing, profound and seemingly irreconcilable disputes about the nature of the good life for the human beings?’. I have chosen material for reading on the basis of the following consideration: how important a role does a particular author play in the effort to solve this question. My choice, due to obvious limitations, means that some approaches will be untouched. However, I believe that this is the way to do justice to the question and examine it in a reasonably deep way. The course is meant as a start and if it motivates the further study of the problem it will fulfil its most fundamental aim. Organisation I. Teaching Methods:

The Aesthetics of Ethical Reflection and the Ethical Significance of Aesthetic Experience:
A Critique of Alasdair MacIntyre and Martha Nussbaum
    1. Literature as Exile for the Question of the Good and of Life as a Whole
In the novel Mein Name sei Gantenbein by Max Frisch the protagonist is radically changing his identity, and his reflection resembles an implicit justification of the author for writing this book:
      (Frisch 1974)
Max Frisch does tell an "I-story"
Among those who try to revive a philosophical ethic with the help of aestheticism there is a marked difference. It has to do with how they regard modernism. There are those who accept its premises (Rorty, Taylor). They want to rid ethical questions of false or inadequate demands of the kind that has been raised by deontological morality or by a world view based on theorems which have been claimed to be true. The reconstruction of aesthetical experience is modeled on modernist art , and ethical questions are submitted to its claims. (Taylor: 456-494). By contrast, those ethical approaches that criticize modernism in toto believe the rehabiltiation of an ethic possible only in the case of a pre-modern ethic (MacIntyre, Nussbaum 1985; Nussbaum 1986). They too, however, borrow from aesthetical concepts. Thus, MacIntyre tries to make up for the loss of substantial conceptions of the good life by means of the notion of the narratability of a consistent life. Martha Nussbaum looks for possibilities to identify a moral attitude
