LiTTerair: Robert M. Pirsig
Een prachtige titel. Pure muziek. 'Between the muffling effect of helmets and the whistling of the wind and the distractions of the landscape, one did not always catch more than a fraction of the lay sermon. But that was all right too.'

As it turns out, The Lila Squad (TLS) has posted SODV on that site, so I will probably just link to it. Much of the discussion on TLS is about the sacredness and inviolability of MoQ. I have found almost visceral concern that MoQ be kept absolute. The reason given is your comments on the first page of chapter 12 of Lila. I feel guilty because most of this visceral reaction happened after my Architecture of Quality diagram was I have one simple question, which for me will put MoQ in a philosophical perspective that I can understand: Does MoQ value its own extension? Please forgive another intrusion by me after such a short interval of time. All my best wishes to you. Sincerely, Doug Doug Renselle

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values

by Robert M. Pirsig
In his now classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig brings us a literary chautauqua, a novel that is meant to both entertain and edify. It scores high on both counts. Phaedrus, our narrator, takes a present-tense cross-country motorcycle trip with his son during which the maintenance of the motorcycle becomes an illustration of how we can unify the cold, rational realm of technology with the warm, imaginative realm of artistry. As in Zen, the trick is to become one with the activity, to engage in it fully, to see and appreciate all detailsbe it hiking in the woods, penning an essay, or tightening the chain on a motorcycle. ROBERT M. PIRSIG

back to the bookshelf zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance an inquiry into values robert m. pirsig And what is good, Phædrus, And what is not good... Need we ask anyone to tell us these things? Part I "What!" he hollers. "Blackbird!" He says something I don’t hear."What?" I holler back. He grabs the back of my helmet and hollers up, "I’ve seen lots of those, Dad!" "Oh!" I holler back. Then I nod. At age eleven you don’t get very impressed with red-winged blackbirds. I’ve wondered why it took us so long to catch on. We saw it and yet we didn’t see it. Or rather we were trained not to see it. Conned, perhaps, into thinking that the real action was metropolitan and all this was just boring hinterland. It was a puzzling thing. The truth knocks on the door and you say, "Go away, I’m looking for the truth," and so it goes away. Puzzling. But once we caught on, of course, nothing could keep us off these roads, weekends, evenings, vacations. We have become real secondary-road motorcycle buffs and found there are things you learn as you go. The main skill is to keep from getting lost. Since the roads are used only by local people who know them by sight nobody complains if the junctions aren’t posted. And often they aren’t. When they are it’s usually a small sign hiding unobtrusively in the weeds and that’s all. County-road-sign makers seldom tell you twice. If you miss that sign in the weeds that’s your problem, not theirs. Moreover, you discover that the highway maps are often inaccurate about county roads. And from time to time you find your "county road" takes you onto a two-rutter and then a single rutter and then into a pasture and stops, or else it takes you into some farmer’s backyard.

Robert M. Pirsig´s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and the term ´Chautauqua´. Contents Introduction A short history of the Chautauqua movement Reconstructing Phaedrus Sources Introduction I would like to use the time to talk in some depth about things that seem important. What is in mind is a sort of Chautauqua The narrator sticks to this expression as well as to the lecture-form, the most defining element of the original Chautauquas, throughout the novel. He uses the term Chautauqua whenever he wants to present notions of a more theoretical kind: motorcycle maintenance, philosophy, technology, 20th century life, etc. These Chautauquas gain importance for the narrator on a very personal level, because the lectures become more specifically linked to the narrator´s life. Still, he never abandons pointing out general implications, trying to come to conclusions at the end of the Chautauquas (although sometimes the end of one and the beginning of another are blurred). A wide range of topics is discussed, which seemingly also inspired the narrator to come up with the term chautauqua. Other than that, parallels can be found in the ´lecturer´ being on the road in the U.S.A., his attachment to rural areas, and his system of day-trips in accordance with his chautauquas. A short history of the Chautauqua Movement Consulting volume nine of ´The New Pelican Guide to English Literature´, the one dedicated to ´American Literature´, I find that

An Inquiry into Values By Robert M. Pirsig At first glance this book seems to have nothing to do with magic. The fact that it purports to be about Zen might suggest that it could be related to magic or at least the philosophy of magic, but even that would be misleading. The Author's Note at the beginning says that "it should in no way be associated with that great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice. It is not very factual on motorcycles either" . However, the subject matter of this book, even if not strictly Zen, is central to a true understanding of magical philosophy, because true magical philosophy is all about values. The problem, of course, like a great many other significant writings, is that to say what the book is about would take away its essence when it is read. The book is basically about a man and his son on a motorcycle touring holiday across America. But to understand the author's point you need to go on the journey with him. If you know where you are going before setting out then you may not understand where you arrive. All this is a flowery way of saying that it would be spoilt by giving away the end, but in this case giving away anything would spoil it. The journey is full of parallels, some of which on first reading it fifteen years ago, went right over this reviewer's head. Certainly it stands a revisit if you haven't read it for a while.

http://members.tripod.com/~Glove_r/Q11-index.html
Relational Awareness For the time being, I am treating awareness as the entire model, both static and Dynamic Quality, for the reasons implied by my interpetation of Godel's Theorum(s). While we are not aware of DQ, without it we would have no awareness, and so it must be acknowledged by virtue of our being aware in the first place. Godels Theorum states: 1) If S is consistent, G is not provable in S. 2) If S is consistent, G is not provable in S - making G of S such that niether G or ~(the negation of) G is provable in S. By now, the gentle reader will be saying to him/her self, what the hell could this possibly have to do with the MOQ? And what the hell does it mean anyway Actually, the idea it outlines is very simple in explanation, yet contains very deep complexities, much like the MOQ itself. Godel's Theorum, sometimes called his Incompleteness Theorums, tells us that in any formal system adequate for number theory, there exists an undecidable formula...that is, a formula that is not provable and who's negation is not provable. The only way to provide proof is to introduce a 'higher' system, yet this higher system will itself contain an undecidable formula, necessitating yet a higher system to provide proof. Godel proved that this is true no matter how 'high' the system is. This leads to the 'many truths' notion of quantum physics, which seems in direct contradiction to our everyday static quality reality of life until it is put into the context of the MOQ. Godel shows us that we cannot prove, nor disprove, anything in our static reality without going outside that reality, or into Dynamic Quality. Since the MOQ says this is impossible, it leads to much confusion until we say that MOQically:
