24. Independent Gay Forum: `Ayn Rand Among Gay Youth,' By Paul Varnell

Ayn Rand among Gay Youth
By Paul Varnell Ayn RandÕs work enjoys surprising popularity among gay youth. The author explores why. A WELL-INFORMED FRIEND asked me recently why Ayn Rand is so popular among young gays and lesbians. ÒIs she?Ó I asked. He assured me that he keeps running into young gay Rand fans in social circumstances and on the Internet. Just recently a gay man visiting his home page told him he should read Ayn Rand. I had not thought much about it before, but it seems reasonable that a writer who stresses individuality, trusting your own perceptions and confidence in your ability to achieve against the odds would be popular among young gays who might feel particularly assaulted by social pressures contrary to their own deepest feelings. Some background here. Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was a novelist and philosopher best known for three remarkable, long novels:

An oustanding source of inspiration and pleasure! Ayn Rand and Nathaniel Branden have an affair, with devastating consequences for all involved. [Dir: Christopher Menaul/ Helen Mirren, Eric Stoltz, Julie Delpy, Peter Fonda/ 104min/ Drama, Biography] This film has something for everyone. First, for Rand's fans, this is an intimate look at the woman Ayn Rand, a look that explains with some understanding the well-known affair between herself and Nathaniel Branden. Also, interwoven with the telling of the details of the affair are elements of the creation of Atlas Shrugged. There could have been more exposition of Rand's philosophy, but you get a pretty good idea what she was about. Second, for Rand's enemies, there is simply the fact that this film is about an affair. Affairs are not the most dignified things, especially when carried on with someone twenty-five years junior, as Nathaniel Branden was to Rand, and especially when involving what appeared to be rough sex, that being the way Rand apparently wanted it. I can only imagine the satisfaction of Leftists at the spectacle.

What Art Is : The Esthetic Theory of Ayn Rand by Louise Torres Michelle Marder Kamhi Cultural icon Ayn Rand (1905-1982) was known as much for her philosophy as for her fiction. Her original theory of esthetics, which attacks many "masterpieces" of modernist art, is as combative and controversial as any of her work, but until now has received little serious scrutiny. In What Art Is , the authors demonstrate that Rand's ideas are supported by evidence from other academic fields. What is art? The arts establishment has a simple answer: anything is art if a reputed artist or expert says it is. Though many people are skeptical about the alleged new art forms that have proliferated since the early twentieth century, today's critics claim that all such work, however incomprehensible, is art. A groundbreaking alternative to this view is provided by philosopher-novelist Ayn Rand (1905 1982). Best known as the author of

Childs, Jr. (Originally published in 1969 by ISIL reprinted in Liberty Against Power (First published on TDO September 17, 1999) Dear Miss Rand: The purpose of this letter is to convert you to free market anarchism. As far as I can determine, no one has ever pointed out to you in detail the errors in your political philosophy. That is my intention here. I attempted this task once before, in my essay "The Contradiction in Objectivism," in the March 1968 issue of the Rampart Journal , but I now think that my argument was ineffective and weak, not emphasizing the essentials of the matter. I will remedy that here.

    FAQ: Virtue of Selfishness
What does Ayn Rand mean when she describes selfishness as a virtue? Answer by J. Raibley Ayn Rand rejects altruism, the view that self-sacrifice is the moral ideal. She argues that the ultimate moral value, for each human individual, is his or her own well-being. Since selfishness (as she understands it) is serious, rational, principled concern with one's own well-being, it turns out to be a prerequisite for the attainment of the ultimate moral value. For this reason, Rand believes that selfishness is a virtue. In the introduction to her collection of essays on ethical philosophy, The Virtue of Selfishness Rand understands, though, that the popular usage of the word, "selfish," is different from the meaning she ascribes to it. Many people use the adjective "selfish" to describe regard for one's own welfare

Presidents Day: A Celebration of What?
by Edwin A. Locke, Ph.D. (Click here to download an image of this author for print publication.)
On Presidents Day, most Americans would like to celebrate the men who have been leaders of the greatest country in the world. It is a sad commentary on our times to note how far back in history we have to go to find presidents genuinely worthy of admiration.
We can admire George Washington, who rejected the opportunity to be a monarch and became the father of our republic. We can admire Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence. We can admire James Madison, the father of our Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Those presidents stood firmly for certain core American principles: individual rights, a free society, limited government. They acted, to the best of their abilities, to implement and preserve these principles.
Today, however, our leaders have distanced themselves so much from such principles that there is no one to admire. Most Americans feel little more than contempt for modern politicians, presidential and non-presidential alike. The reason is that our politicians do not stand for anything at all.
