Assisted Suicide: A Moral Right
Ashcroft's Decree Threatens Doctors' and Patients' Rights
By Thomas Bowden
The irony was so rich it could be lost only on a strict religious conservative like U.S. attorney general John Ashcroft.
What followed immediately was a court challenge by the State of Oregon, whose voters had legalized doctor-assisted suicide under strict procedures designed to ensure that a patient's free will coincided with a physician's objective judgment that suicide was a reasonable option.
Eventually, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether Ashcroft's gambit was legal, and whether the Controlled Dangerous Substances Act can be used to frighten doctors into ignoring their patients' desperate entreaties. But in the meantime, one thing is clear: there is no rational, secular basis upon which the government can properly prevent any individual from choosing to end his own life. Rather, it is religious mysticism that energizes Ashcroft and the Bush administration into intimidating doctors who dare to defy God's divine plan.
The conservatives' outrage at the Oregon doctors stems from the belief that human life is a gift from the Lord, who puts us here on earth to carry out His will. Thus, the very idea of suicide is anathema, because one who "plays God" by causing his own death, or assisting in the death of another, insults his Maker and invites eternal damnation, not to mention divine retribution against the decadent society that permits such sinful behavior.

Item Religion News Blog http://www.gospelcom.net/apologeticsindex/rnb/archives/00002389.html The Baltimore Sun, Feb. 16, 2003 http://www.sunspot.net/ By Ray Jenkins The author of 'The Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged' simply won't go away - but she should. At the close of the last century, Modern Library, the prestige publisher, announced its list of the 100 best novels of the 100 years, as chosen by a panel of top writers and scholars. Not a single work by Ayn Rand made the list. Then, turning the contest into a national parlor game, Modern Library invited ordinary readers to submit their choices. A quarter of a million responded, and presto! Rand's magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, scored No. 1, and three more Rand novels appeared in the top 10. This news might have brought a contemptuous smile to Ayn Rand's stony face, but for one thing: Her chief competitor was L. Ron Hubbard, who

Rand, Ayn 1905-82, American writer, b. St. Petersburg, Russia. She came to the United States in 1926 and worked for many years as a screenwriter. Her novels are romantic and dramatic, and they espouse a philosophy of rational self-interest that opposes the collective of the modern welfare state. Her best-known novels include The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957). In For the New Intellectual See the memoir by Nathaniel Branden (1989); biography by Barbara Branden (1987); study by James T. Baker (1987).

The Ayn Rand Letter was published monthly from October 1971 to February 1976. It was rather different in format from its predecessors ( The Objectivist Newsletter and The Objectivist ). It presented a single major article per issue, in the style of a typewritten letter. It was originally published fortnightly, but Rand's ill health caused the letter to become increasingly behind schedule, ultimately having issues dated for September 1974 but published in mid-1975. In 1975 the The Ayn Rand Letter officially went to a monthly schedule, promptly dropped to a bi-monthly schedule, and then ceased publication. Rand was the publisher, editor and the author of most of the articles, although Leonard Peikoff contributed some articles as well. The table below lists the title of every item published in The Ayn Rand Letter (alphabetically), followed by the issue date (chronologically, since some items are recurring columns that have the same title in multiple issues), author, and the volume/issue number. Sometimes, you'll laugh out loud
    Cons
Laughing out loud 4 times in 1200 pages isn't enough Full Review Expressing an opinion on Ayn Rand is like expressing an opinion on the Bible or the Backstreet Boys. People who believe have strong, even virulent, views. And they're not takin' any of your cr*p. An attack on the author or the philosophy is an attack on them. People take these things to heart. But at least if you take an anti-Bible view, there are others out there to stand by your side. People who disagree with Ayn Rand simply don't give a damn. So I'll stand alone on this one, the target of those slings and arrows from you Randies, you YAFers, you Goldwater Republicans. The Story Atlas Shrugged is for Randies what the Republic On the Social Contract , the Politics , the Treatise on Human Nature and Leviathan are to real philosophers: An attempt to describe the nature of civil human relations, a stab at normative ethics and a dream of an ideal society.

    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/R/randayn/1.html
    Rand, Ayn
American novelist and philosopher, whose championing of the gifted individual established her as a controversial figure in 20th-century literary and philosophical debate. Rand upheld individualism over collectivism and egoism over altruism. She staunchly defended reason as the tool that sustains and nourishes the individual against the forces that can weaken it.
Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Rand immigrated to the United States in 1926. She worked sporadically as a screenwriter and script reader in Hollywood, California, until 1943. Her first two novels, We the Living (1936) and Anthem (1938), portray dystopias and dictatorships as warnings against monolithic sociopolitical systems such as Communism and Fascism.
Atlas Shrugged (1957), a lengthy and popular novel, depicted five characters in a fictional America moving toward a bizarre form of socialism. The book was criticized for its severe characterizations and raised concerns about the harshness of Rand's search for the perfect egoist. After the book's publication, Rand stopped writing fiction. She worked as a public speaker and began to publish a newsletter, first called The Objectivist Newsletter (1962-1965), then The Objectivist (1966-1971), and later The Ayn Rand Letter (1971-1975). Her increasing visibility as a lecturer on objectivism led her to write the nonfiction books The Virtue of Selfishness: A Concept of New Egoism (1964) and Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology (1967).
