John Rawls
John Rawls stands as the most notableand controversialpolitical theorists of the twentieth-century. His 1971 work A Theory of Justice redefined the status of political philosophy in the West, giving central focus to the group of ideas surrounding the concept of "liberalism." The liberal democrat state, Rawls argues here and elsewhere, can and should be the guarantor of social justice. In A Theory of Justice , Rawls sketches a complex and well-defined notion of how such a state could make a positive impact in terms of being redistributively justthat is, how a liberal democrat state could insure that its members were provided with basic rights and more or less equal opportunities. In later works, including Political Liberalism , Rawls deals with the thorny issue of cultural pluralism, and how a liberal state could hope to incorporate the life-plans of many different cultures under one roof.
In A Theory of Justice , Rawls attempts to use a constructivist technique similar to the one Kant
Rawls' earlier book has been the subject of much debate, and has been criticized as being the philosophical foundation for the welfare state. However, in a series of papers written after

John Rawls. A Theory of Justice(1971). Rawls's theory of justice revolvesaround the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice
http://caae.phil.cmu.edu/Cavalier/Forum/meta/background/Rawls.html
John Rawls
A Theory of Justice
Rawls's theory of justice revolves around the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice which would, in turn, guarantee a just and morally acceptable society. The first principle guarantees the right of each person to have the most extensive basic liberty compatible with the liberty of others. The second principle states that social and economic positions are to be (a) to everyone's advantage and (b) open to all. A key problem for Rawls is to show how such principles would be universally adopted, and here the work borders on general ethical issues. He introduces a theoretical "veil of ignorance" in which all the "players" in the social game would be placed in a situation which is called the "original position." Having only a general knowledge about the facts of "life and society," each player is to make a "rationally prudential choice" concerning the kind of social institution they would enter into contract with. By denying the players any specific information about themselves it forces them to adopt a generalized point of view that bears a strong resemblance to the moral point of view. "Moral conclusions can be reached without abandoning the prudential standpoint and positing a moral outlook merely by pursuing one's own prudential reasoning under certain procedural bargaining and knowledge constraints." Comments on Rawls's Political Liberalism Thomas McCarthy's recent comments on Habermas and Rawls.

John Rawls, 1921-
Modern Harvard philosopher. In his most famous book, Theory of Justice (1971), Rawls proposed the idea of "original position", a mental exercise whereby a group of rational people must establish a principle of fairness (such as distribution of income) without knowing beforehand where on the resulting pecking order they will end up themselves. Rawls used this device to argue that the optimal arrangement will be to "maximize the welfare of society's worse-off member", which effectively justifies an egalitarian "no-substitution" social welfare function Major works of John Rawls

Collected Papers
by John Rawls , Samuel Richard Freeman (Editor) John Rawls's work on justice has drawn more commentary and aroused wider attention than any other work in moral or political philosophy in the twentieth century. But before and after writing his great treatises, Rawls produced a steady stream of essays, some of which articulate views of justice and liberalism distinct from those found in the two books. They are important in and of themselves because of the deep issues about the nature of justice, moral reasoning, and liberalism they raise as well as for the light they shed on the evolution of Rawls's views.... John Rawls Dates:
Born: February 21, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland
Died: n/a Biography: John Rawls is an American political philosopher whose own version of the social contract theory develops the concept of justice being equivalent to fairness. According to Rawls, the best way to balance freedoms and limit inequality in a society is for people to imagine that they they are setting up the rules from behind a "veil of ignorance." What this phrase means is that, when setting up the rules, people have no idea who or what they will be when enter society. It is possible to be part of any class, race, etc. In this way, people have to devise rules which will be equally beneficial and least harmful to all.
