Paul Ricoeur and the Hermeneutics of Suspicion: A Brief Overview and Critique
Essay by by G. D. Robinson. Excerpt: Hermeneutics is both science and art. In many ways this beguilingly simple statement is responsible for the modern ferment in hermeneutics - a process begun with F. Schleiermacher (1768-1834) and his attempt to gain meaning through understanding the mind of the author; given significant impetus more recently in the seminal work of Hans-Georg Gadamer and his call for a dialectic between the horizons of the text and reader; and radicalized in the increasingly reader-response oriented hermeneutics of today.

Ricoeur, Paul The Just . Translated by David Pellauer. 192 p. 2000, 2003 Cloth $20.00sp 0-226-71339-3 Spring 2000 This collection grew out of a series of lectures given in France by noted French philosopher Paul Ricoeur on the nature of justice and the law. The essays represent a reflection on the relation between the concept of the juridicalas embedded in written laws, tribunals, judges, and verdictsand the philosophical concept of right, situated between moral theory and politics. Ricoeur argues that in political philosophy the question of right is obscured by the haunting presence of historical evil, however, in a philosophy of right, the leading theme is peace. Ricoeur revisits the work of Plato, Aristotle, and Kant in his engagements with contemporary thinkers, particularly John Rawls, Michael Walzer, Hannah Arendt, and Ronald Dworkin. His thought ranges from conceptual analysis, to the theory of law, and finally to the act of judging, exploring the ideas of sanction, rehabilitation, pardon, and the status of conscience in relation to the demands of the law. Mind and Brain: Only the Right Connections
Review of What makes us think?
Jean-Pierre Changeux and Paul Ricoeur
Princeton University Press, 2000 ($29.95)
By Howard Gardner
Draft: July 2000
I Our age is marked by the triumph of science. Greek philosophers may have been the first to raise questions about the nature of matter, living entities, knowledge, will, truth, beauty, and goodness. In recent centuries, however, philosophy has steadily been yielding ground, enthusiastically or reluctantly, to empirical science. Why speculate endlessly about the physical or biological world when you can carry out laboratory experiments, make precise measurements, test predictions, and revise proposed explanatory theories in light of findings? If there are material or psychic costs to this unflinchingly empirical approach, most of us have no desire to confront them (Cf. Joy, 2000). Nowadays, most discussions of the territory where science and philosophy overlap take place in scholarly journals or on Internet sites. It is rare to encounter a full-length book in which scholars have the leisure to lay out their positions at length, undertake substantial interchanges with one another, and provide verbal and pictorial examples. In English I can only remember the 1978 discussion of The Self and Its Brain between philosopher Karl Popper and neuroscientist John Eccles. Of course, the genre itself does not guarantee genuine engagement on the part of the participants nor intellectual or literary rewards for the audience. In the late 1980s neuroscientist Jean-Pierre Changeux and mathematician Alain Connes conducted "Conversations on Mind, Matter, and Mathematics." The two debaters proceeded from such different premises and were sufficiently dismissive of one another that they resembled two French tankers passing one another at midnight.

Ricoeur, Paul Oneself as Another . Translated by Kathleen Blamey. x, 364 p. 1992 Paper $18.00tx 0-226-71329-6 Fall 1994 Paul Ricoeur has been hailed as one of the most important thinkers of the century. Oneself as Another, the clearest account of his "philosophical ethics," substantiates this position and lays the groundwork for a metaphysics of morals. Focusing on the concept of personal identity, Ricoeur develops a hermeneutics of the self that charts its epistemological path and ontological status. Table of Contents

28. Philosophical Hermeneutics, Or Theories Of Interpretation
Graduate Hermeneutics Lectures this course will begin with a consideration of the background of philosophical hermeneutics (theories of interpretation) in modern philosophy (Descartes, Hume, Kant, Dilthey). Then it will follow the hermeneutic tradition in philosophy as it develops in the twentieth century, through a philosophical examination of the works of Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, J¼rgen Habermas, and paul ricoeur. In addition, we will examine the independent yet in part parallel philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Richard's paradox

Ricoeur, Paul (1913) right, the right, the political Right, the political New About The Oxford Companion to Philosophy from Oxford University Press Ric ur, Paul French philosopher and theorist of symbolic forms. Ric ur's project since the 1950s has been to mediate in the 'conflict of interpretations' that has grown up among the various schools of linguistic, hermeneutic, and literary-critical theory. His earliest writings were mainly concerned with the debate between phenomenology and structuralism , the one aimed towards interpreting language in its creative (i.e. symbolic, metaphorical, or artistic) manifestations, the other premissed on a formal methodology that took for granted, following Saussure, the priority of code and system over expressive content. This work often had a markedly theological cast, most evident in books (like The Symbolism of Evil ) where Ric ur sought to establish links between present-day schools of thought and their various precursory movements in the history of Jewish and Christian exegetical tradition. If there is one major theme that has preoccupied his thinking since then, it is the idea that all interpretation partakes of a double ('negative' and 'positive') hermeneutic. Such is the argument of his book

Ricoeur, Paul
Paul Ricoeur (b. 1913), who has been professor of philosophy at the University of Paris and the University of Chicago, has had extraordinary influence in such disparate fields as theology, psychoanalysis, historiography, political economy, and literary theory. Only Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida among contemporary French philosophers have had such an impact outside their domain. But in contrast to Foucault and Derrida, Ricoeur has never departed from the professional concerns of his discipline. All of his work has been written within the philosophical paradigm of the two traditions he has merged- Phenomenology , as it developed from Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger , and Hermeneutics , as revised by Hans-Georg Gadamer.
Beginning with Interpretation Theory: Discourse and the Surplus of Meaning (1976) and culminating with volume 3 of Time and Narrative (1986), Ricoeur has addressed every major theoretical issue of literary criticism. During these ten years he wrote five books and numerous articles, selections from which have been collected and edited by John B. Thompson in Hermeneutics and the Human Sciences (1981), by George H.
