Abstract
"Could a machine think?" On the argument advanced here only a machine could think, and only very special kinds of machines, namely brains and machines with internal causal powers equivalent to those of brains And that is why strong AI has little to tell us about thinking, since it is not about machines but about programs, and no program by itself is sufficient for thinking.

  • Aims:
An orientation into the fast developing area of consciousness studies in the context of cognitive sciences. The basic point of this research is to delineate the differences between implicit and explicit processes and representations in perception, cognition and memory.
    Course outline:
    • the place of consciousness studies in cognitive science; approaches to consciousnee; function of consciousness; the uses of consciousness.

    Objectives:
On the completion of the course the students should be able to discuss any topic in cognitive sciences according to the new key differentiation between implicit and explicit information processing.
    Learning strategies:
Guided reading; tutor-led group discussion; preparation of a thesis on a chosen topic.
    Overall duration and format:
A one-semester course (15 weeks) with two hours lecturing and discussion. Homework assignments.
    Credit hours:
    Lecturer:

    Jerry Shaffer, Ph. D.
Review of John R. Searle, The Construction of Social Reality , Free Press:
N.Y., 1995 John Searle is a well-known American philosopher, at the Univ. of Calif, Berkeley. He has written a number of books such as "Speech Acts," "Intentionality," "The Rediscovery of the Mind," and "Minds, Brains, and
Science," and a multitude of scholarly articles. Searle is very much a Modernist philosopher. He believes that there exist objective facts which make the world the way it is and that at least some of these facts can be known to a high degree of probability. He is careful to define key terms as precisely as he can and explain them with a multitude of examples. He writes in a plain and unadorned style, avoiding flowery passages and dark sayings. No special expertise is needed to understand this book. Any theses he advances he defends with arguments that he believes to be rigorous and logical. But for all his Modernism, he is Post-Modern in holding that much of our knowledge is concerned with facts which are socially constructed. Most of this ``book consists of an examination of these social facts and an explanation of how they arise. In this book, Searle defends the "Realist" view that there exists a real world comprised of objective facts which fall into two categories. In one category are (1) those facts (he calls them "brute facts") which exist independently of what humans think about them and (2) those facts which depend for their existence on human thought (he calls them "social facts.") Examples of the first sort are the mental fact that I am now in pain and the physical facts that Mount Everest has snow and ice at its summit and that hydrogen atoms have one electron. Examples of the second sort of fact, social facts, are that this piece of paper is a five dollar bill, that he is a citizen of the U. S., that the New York Giants won the 1991 superbowl, and that he owns a piece of property in Berkeley, CA.

Searle's Chinese Room Argument showed a fatal flaw in computationalism
(the idea that mental states are just computational states) and helped usher in

    Abstract
Turing's celebrated 1950 paper proposes a very general methodological criterion for modelling
mental function: total functional equivalence and indistinguishability. His criterion gives rise to a hierarchy of
Turing Tests, from subtotal ("toy") fragments of our functions (t1), to total symbolic (pen-pal) function (T2
the standard Turing Test), to total external sensorimotor (robotic) function (T3), to total internal microfunction
(T4), to total indistinguishability in every empirically discernible respect (T5). This is a "reverse-engineering"
hierarchy of (decreasing) empirical underdetermination of the theory by the data. Level t1 is clearly too
underdetermined, T2 is vulnerable to a counterexample (Searle's Chinese Room Argument), and T4 and T5 are
