"The Work of Peter Singer"
General description Measured in terms of his influence on either academic philosophy or popular culture, Peter Singer is one of the most influential of living philosophers. His "popular" writings have inspired millions to activism of various kinds (from protesting various uses of non-human animals to protesting Singer's right to lecture publicly in Germany and his recent appointment to Princeton University). His professional work began during the emergence of "applied ethics" as a subdiscipline of philosophy and his works have a central place in almost all anthologies in the area. In this seminar we will read his most widely discussed "popular" works: Animal Liberation and "Famine, Affluence, and Morality"), but also:
  • one of the main works of his dissertation advisor, R.M. Hare (whose basic views in ethical theory have heavily shaped Singer's),
  • a couple of Singer's earliest philosophical papers on fundamental questions in ethical theory,
  • his later, more systematic treatment of applied ethics (in

Why Are We Afraid of Peter Singer?
The world's most reviled philosopher just wants more happiness for everyone By JEFF SHARLET Peter Singer's troubles began when he was finally allowed to speak in Germany. It was 1989. The Australian philosopher had gone to lecture in the country that ALSO SEE: Colloquy: Join a debate on issues raised in this article his parents had fled five decades before, and that had sent three of his grandparents to their deaths in concentration camps.
His topic was euthanasia. He is in favor of it. Not just for the terminally ill, but also, in some cases, for the very young. In a book called Practical Ethics (Cambridge University Press, 1979), he'd written: "killing a disabled infant is not morally equivalent to killing a person. Very often it is not wrong at all."
Those sentences have trailed him ever since, "exposed" on editorial pages like an old rap sheet resurfacing. They do not mean what they seem to mean here, shorn of the logical reasoning with which they're surrounded in the book, the qualifiers and the disputes over definitions that make philosophy philosophy. But standing alone they are terrifying. Many Germans who encountered them quoted like that before Mr. Singer's arrival heard echoes of the past. In 1939, Hitler had instructed the doctors of the Third Reich to pursue a policy of putting incurable patients to death. He termed it "mercy killing." Was that what Mr. Singer considered "philosophy"?

Account Signup Peter Singer's Animal Liberation (Part 2) By James Parker Friday, August 4, 2000 Utilitarianism: causing pain and taking the lives of animals
Apart from the unworkability of his cost/benefit method of guiding action, Singer's "updating" of Bentham's utilitarianism is troubling on a deeper level. Can it be true that the pain and the interests of animals are of the same moral significance as the equally severe pain and the interests of humans?
Singer, of course, does not claim that human and animal pain or human and animal interests are equal, but only that they must be given equal consideration. We may treat humans and animals differently, but always because of their greater or lesser suffering or their greater or lesser interests and never because they are humans in the one case, animals in the other. That being so, Singer's moral concern about animal research focuses on two issues: (1) subjecting animals to pain, and (2) painlessly killing animals whose interests are on par with the interests of newborn, severely retarded and hopelessly senile humans.
"The distinction is this: the birth of a 'marginal' human, or the reduction of a normal human to a marginal state, is a tragedy; the birth of say, a healthy collie pup, whose potentials are roughly on a par with the human's is not" (16).

Account Signup Peter Singer Many observers argue the contemporary animal rights movement started with the 1975 publication of Peter Singer's book, Animal Liberation . Although he is strongly associated with the animal rights movement, Singer doesn't believe any living things have rights. Instead, Singer is a utilitarian who believes the goal of ethical action is to minimize pain and suffering. In Animal Liberation , Singer argues that most animals are capable of experiencing pain and suffering to the same degree that human infants are. Since human society grants legal rights to human infants, Singer argues human society should grant legal rights to animals. Those who disagree with this position are guilty of "speciesism" irrationally favoring the human species over other species. Singer argues that almost all contemporary human uses of animals would be forbidden were his philosophy to be adopted.

    Dissecting Peter Singer:
Putting the animal rights guru under a microscope
    By Adrian Morrison DVM, PhD
Foolish, outrageous claims against the necessity or even usefulness of animal-based research are common in animal rights literature. These are as irresponsible as they are silly because they can lead the unwary with a natural, compassionate concern for animals to contribute money to a cause actually working against the contributor's best interests. Although I believe the political leaders of the animal rights movement know better and lie deliberately, they are not the most dangerous or even the most culpable in my mind.

Therefore, with the permission of Daniel G. Jennings , author of the article, we present, for your educational reading... Who is Peter Singer
and Why Should you care about him?
An arrogant observation by Daniel G. Jennings,
arrogant observer and defender of freedom.
Who is Peter Singer and why should you care about him? Simple, Peter Singer, maybe the most dangerous man in the world today. Singer, could be the most dangerous man in the world, because he is the stupid and misguided fool leading a vicious and mindless assault on human rights and the idea of freedom itself. The vast majority of you, don't know who Singer is and there is no reason you should know. Singer is a philosopher, a professor at a university in Melbourne Australia who is currently a visiting lecturer at Princeton. He also wrote the article on ethics in the current Encyclopedia Britannica. Singer, judging by his writings, is also a complete idiot, but a large portion of the world's intellectuals are hailing him as a genius and an expert on ethics and philosophy. Therein lies the danger, Singer is promoting a set of ideas that if applied to the real world will lead to complete and total disaster.

By Roger Fouts After reading Fouts' Next Of Kin I was speechless. I can express how wonderful it is to learn from an individual whose humility, concern for life and compassion is his life work. I simply could not put the book down! It was one of the most thoughtful, eye-opening, and educated books that I have ever read. Having the opportunity to listen to Roger Fouts speak on book tour, my heart opened to his message of compassion; his willingness to express his feelings and experiences to a group of strangers further enhanced my view of this incredible individual. The former professor at Australia's Monash University is now the Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at the University Center for Human Values. At Princeton, Singer molds and shapes the views of many future leaders in medicine, law, education and business. Not suprisingly, his appointment was met with shock, dismay and protests. Peter Singer is an advocate of infanticide and euthanasia. Disapproval of his views came from all quarters. In l997, when Singer was invited to address a Swedish book fair, Simon Wiesenthal, the world's leading Nazi hunter, wrote to the organizers stating that "a professor of morals who justifies the right to kill handicapped newborns...is in my opinion unacceptable for representation at your level." "Unspeakable Conversations" by Harriet McBryde Johnson, an attorney and disability rights activist, writes of her debate with Peter Singer. ( NY Times Magazine
"I can't help being dazzled by his verbal facility....I have trouble with basing life-and-death decisions on market considerations when the market is structured by prejudice."

Welcome to the homepage of the Animal Liberation Action Group, a recognized student organization at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, USA. The group advances knowledge of animal exploitation, and seeks to end prejudice and unjustifiable discrimination against animals. Peter Singer , philosopher, author and the world's foremost Animal Liberationist, articulates the philosophy and goals of the Animal Liberation movement. A main point of this philosophy is that:
. . . the ethical principle on which human equality rests requires us to extend equal consideration to animals, too

PRÁVA ZVÍØAT: Vyšla knížka Peter Singer Osvobození zvíøat

Inka Wagnerová Jaké knihy zásadnì a v pozitivním smyslu ovlivnily západní civilizaci? Øada anket a studií pøisuzuje v beletrii první místo románu Harriet Beecher Stoweové Chaloupka strýèka Toma pøedevším kvùli jejím zásluhám o zákaz otroctví.
