Benedict (Baruch) de Spinoza Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher. He was also called Benedict, the Latin form of Baruch. Spinoza was born in Amsterdam of Jewish parents. He early acquired the reputation of a freethinker and was excommunicated by the Jewish community in 1656. He then lived in several towns in the Netherlands, earning a living as a lens grinder. Throughout his career, Spinoza was a strong supporter of religious and political liberalism. He prized his independence, rejecting offers of a pension from King Louis XIV of France and of a university professorship in Germany. Although he was respected by many, Spinoza was controversial because of his unorthodox views on religion, philosophy, and politics. Spinoza's philosophy was strongly influenced by the French philosopher Rene Descartes . Spinoza accepted Descartes's view that thought and matter are the basic categories of reality. The physical world is nothing but bits of matter moving and interacting according to general causal laws. However, in his masterpiece, The Ethics (published shortly after his death), Spinoza developed Descartes's ideas in radically unconventional ways. Spinoza stated that "God or Nature" is the only substance. Thought and matter are God's infinite attributes, and all finite things (such as human minds and bodies) are only modes or states of the attributes of God. Spinoza allowed no exceptions to causality, denying free will to humanity and God. He maintained, however, that freedom of mind can be obtained by rational understanding of our place in nature and our subjection to its lawsparticularly the laws of the passions.

Baruch or Benedict de Spinoza was born in Amsterdam into a distinguished Jewish family, exiled from Spain and living in the relative religious freedom of the Netherlands. He attended the Jewish school, and became learned in the work of Jewish and Arabic theologians. However, contact with dissident Christian movements, and with the with the scientific and philosophical thought of Descartes, led Spinoza to distance himself from orthodox life, and in 1656 he was deemed a heretic, cast out of the synagogue, and cursed with all the curses of the firmament. For a short time Spinoza was exiled from Amsterdam, but he returned and began a life supporting himself by grinding lenses and teaching. In 1660 he moved to Voorburg and then on to the Hague, where he lived with great fugality on a small pension. In 1672 Spinoza undertook a small diplomatic mission to the invading French army, but on his return was under suspicion as a spy, and narrowly escaped being killed by the mob. Spinoza lived out his remaining years in the same frugal state, writing and corresponding. He died of phthisis, possibly brought on by his trade as a lens-grinder. Note: the following has been abstracted from the Grolier Encyclopedia. Baruch Spinoza Baruch (or Benedict) Spinoza, b. Amsterdam, Nov. 24, 1632, d. Feb. 21, 1677, was one of the most important philosophers of the European tradition of Rationalism Life Spinoza was born into a family of Portuguese Jews who were refugees to Holland at the end of the 16th century. His early education was in Hebrew, the Bible, the Talmud, and the Kabbalah. Later he studied such Jewish thinkers as Maimonides, Gersonides, and Crescas. After 1651 he read some Renaissance Neoplatonism and stoicism as well as the work of certain Dutch Calvinist scholastics. He also studied Latin, mathematics, and Cartesian philosophy. Not yet 24 years old, Spinoza rejected traditional interpretations of Scripture and thus deviated from Jewish orthodoxy. In 1656 he was expelled from the synagogue at Amsterdam. Supporting himself by grinding lenses for optical instruments, Spinoza stayed for a period of time in the vicinity of Amsterdam, where he gave private lessons and carried on a wide correspondence. In 1660 he went to Rijnsburg, near Leiden, where he began his correspondence with Henry Oldenburg, secretary of the Royal Society in London. In 1664 he settled in Voorsburg near The Hague, where he vainly sought solitude and tranquillity, but in 1671 he moved to The Hague itself. In order not to compromise his freedom of thought and speech, he refused a chair at the University of Heidelberg two years later. By now he was famous and, among others, even Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz came to visit him. He died of tuberculosis.

Als Sohn portugiesisch-spanischer Exiljuden in Amsterdam lehnte er die Möglichkeit ab, Rabbiner zu werden, wie auch später einen Ruf an die Universität Heidelberg. Das sind Äußerlichkeiten. Was er viel mehr ablehnte, war die Engstirnigkeit. Eine Engstirnigkeit, die er geistig turmhoch überwinden konnte, die ihn bezeichnenderweise aber - da selbstredend die mit den engen Stirnen ihn nicht begreifen konnten und nicht nur damals lebten - mit der Verfluchung und Verbannung erst aus seiner Gemeinde, dann geradezu aus der menschlichen Gesellschaft bis lange über seinen Tod hinaus zu vernichten strebte. In seinem Leben vegetierte er die meiste Zeit einsam und im Verborgenen nahe Amsterdam in einem kleinen Zimmer, das er kaum verließ. Er arbeitete des Nachts, verdiente sich als Linsenschleifer das karge Brot, siecht mit der Schwindsucht dahin (Biografien unter Link und Link ). In seinem Leben versuchte man gar, ihn zu ermorden und noch hundert Jahre nach seinem Tod machte man ihn mundtot und war sein Werk verboten. Die Verfluchung der Engstirnigen die sogar ihrem Gott die Vorschriften machen, denn den riefen sie auf, sein Zorn möge gegen ihn entflammen, er möge Spinoza austilgen und ihm niemals verzeihen - verfolgt ihn bis heute, denn Dummheit und Intoleranz sterben vermutlich zuletzt aus.
