ISI. 250 pp. $24.95 Reviewed by Glenn Tinder First, the basics: born in Germany in 1901, Eric Voegelin received a doctorate in political science from the University of Vienna, carried on several years of postdoctoral study in England, America, and France, and then took up an academic career in Austria. He drew the hostility of the Nazis with two early works on race, and in 1938 he fled to America, where he taught for many years, mainly at Louisiana State University. He ended his professional career at the Hoover Institution and died in 1985. He was not only a scholar, however. He was also a thinker, and in his research was always philosophically reflective, looking not only for truth about the past but also for truth about human nature and the human condition. Whether or not he originated any one great idea, he was unquestionably an original mind. His vocabulary, his method, and his angle of vision were distinctively his own. There is no one quite like him in the intellectual world of the twentieth century. Voegelin also defies the usual ideological classifications. Aspects of his thought will appeal to conservatives. He was profoundly hostile to revolutionary movements of the kind that began with the French Revolution. He was a principled opponent of both ideology and political activism. Yet Voegelin did not call himself a conservative, and he spoke of conservatism as simply another ideology. He paid little attention to Burke and did not embrace the cardinal proposition of classical conservatism: that tradition can effectively embody and safeguard human wisdom.

Analysis Eric Voegelin Revisited Are we a "polarized" society? If we are, who is to blame? By R.E. "Gus" Payne Special to The Watchdog Our media analysts are fond of telling us that we live in a "divided" or "polarized" society in America. They blame the major political parties, claiming they have a vested interest in turning rich against poor, black against white, female against male, etc.. The media seemingly has to pinpoint blame for any wrongdoing it perceives. But it never chooses to blame itself. "That a large sector of American intellectuals is anti-American must be acknowledged, even if they would deny it; it is the same anti-Americanism that is to be found among European intellectuals," wrote Voegelin. We need not worry ourselves, however, that these American anti-Americans shall ever amount to anything resembling a potent political force - "if, for no other reasons than because, so far as I know the most ardent "liberal" intellectuals, short of a few scholars, are not literate enough" to understand the thoughts of Hegel or Karl Marx, according to Voegelin. The language of "polarization" is more popular now than it was when Voegelin observed it. He believed that because of the structure of American society, attempts at polarization will fail and that the dissenters will end up in near isolation, they themselves separated from the rest of us. However, one must recall the Vietnam War era. Voegelin did. Without commenting on whether America should have been engaged in the war or not, he concluded the answer to that question was not nearly as important as was the fact that "once it was started it had to be carried through to some sort of conclusion, because one cannot simply end a war by walking out of it."

For Voegelin, the "crisis of the West," reflected in the horrific wars and social chaos of the twentieth century, was the result of the gradual detachment of the our theoretical language from the unique, historical encounters with transcendence that lay at the foundation of Western civilization. As Federici shows, Voegelin undertook two massive efforts to provide evidence for this thesis in his five-volume Order and History series and in his posthumously published multi-volume History of Political Ideas The ultimate goal of Voegelin's project, Federici argues, was to liberate modern men and women from the grasp of ideologies, which Voegelin characterized as simplified constructions of reality that always distorted and obscured the truth. Hence, Voegelin was especially critical of Nazism, Marxism, gnosticism, and scientism. But he was also a critic of doctrinal Christianity and conservatism, positions that Federici explains in detail. Federici also introduces the reader to Voegelin's difficult but influential philosophy of consciousness, and he includes a helpful glossary of Voegelinian terms.

Nel 1910 la sua famiglia si trasferisce a Vienna: la vivacità culturale della capitale all'inizio degli anni venti influisce favorevolmente sul giovane, risultando fondamentale per la sua formazione e la produzione intellettuale futura. In questo periodo frequenta l'ambiente della "scuola viennese", stringendo rapporti di amicizia con Hayek, Machlup, Morgestern. Sempre a Vienna entra in contatto con Hans Kelsen (padre della dottrina pura del diritto nonché autore della costituzione del 1920) con cui porterà a termine la dissertazione di dottorato dal titolo "Wechselwirkung und Gezweiung" del 1922, lavoro che propone una comparazione delle categorie sociologiche di George Simmel e Otmar Spann. Nel frattempo studia l'opera di Max Weber, attraverso cui riconosce l'esigenza, ai fini di una corretta scienza politica e sociale, di una conoscenza comparativa non solo della civiltà moderna, ma anche di quella antica e medievale.
