Sengoopta, Chandak Otto Weininger Sex, Science, and Self in Imperial Vienna . x, 246 p., 1 halftone. 2000 Series: (SHS) The Chicago Series on Sexuality, History, and Society Cloth $29.00sp 0-226-74867-7 Spring 2000 Turn-of-the century Vienna is remembered as an aesthetic, erotic, and intellectual world: the birthplace of Freud and psychoanalysis, the waltz, and novels of Schnitzler. The contexts of this cultural vibrancy, Chandak Sengoopta argues, were darker and more complex than we might imagine. This provocative, enlightening study explores the milieu in which the philosopher Otto Weininger (1880-1903) wrote his controversial book Sex and Character. Shortly after its publication, Weininger committed suicide at the age of twenty-three. His book, which argued that women and Jews were mere sexual beings who lacked individuality, became a bestseller. Hailed as a genius by intellectuals such as Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Kraus, Weininger was admired, not for his prejudices, but for his engagement with the central issues of the timethe nature and meanings of identity. Sengoopta pays particular attention to how Weininger appropriated scientific language and data to defend his views and examines the scientific theories themselves. Subjects:

50. De Nobilitate Et Praecellentia And Otto Weininger.

Agrippa, Weininger and Feminism: a Tale of the Eagle
(based on comments from my foreword and Bulgarian translation of De occulta philosophia) Is there any article treating Renaissance and feminism which had not at least mentioned Agrippa ? I haven't read one. If you had, please let me know. If you can, please let its author know he knows nothing. No feminist writer will ever dare question Agrippa's influence on feminism. No modern feminist will ever try to have a look at Agrippa's hermetic view of Woman. For Hermetica was, is, and will always be irrelevant to Margarets - of Austria, of Alençon, of wherever. Even Prof. Charles Nauert, in a recent book review in The Sixteenth Century Journal (vol. xxviii, No.2, summer 1997, pp.688-9), concerning the English edition of De nobilitate et praecellentia foeminei sexus , confessed he overlooked Agrippa's influence on feminism in his work of 1965 (Nauert, Charles G., Jr. : Agrippa and the Crisis of Renaissance Thought, Urbana, Illinois. See also my bibliography on Agrippa) with these words: "Only when viewed in the context of this emerging protofeminist tradition does the larger significance of the Declamation [De nobilitate et praecellentia foeminei sexus] stand out. Judged only in the context of Agrippa's other works, the treatise may seem to be of modest importance, just another example of Agrippa's tendency to go counter to prevailing opinion and to present shrewd arguments that stand conventional wisdom on its head. Agrippa himself claims no more, and the present reviewer in his own study of Agrippa's thought published in 1965 certainly failed (as Rabil justly notes) to perceive this little book's significance as part of an emergent protofeminist challenge to misogyny."

Author's Preface
This book is an attempt to place the relations of Sex in a new and decisive light. It is an attempt not to collect the greatest possible number of distinguishing characters, or to arrange into a system all the results of scientific measuring and experiment, but to refer to a single principle the whole contrast between man and woman. In this respect the book differs from all other works on the same subject. It does not linger over this or that detail, but presses on to its ultimate goal; it does not heap investigation on investigation, but combines the psychical differences between the sexes into a system; it deals not with women, but with woman. It sets out, indeed, from the most common and obvious facts, but intends to reach a single, concrete principle. This is not "inductive metaphysics"; it is gradual approach to the heart of psychology.
The investigation is not of details, but of principles; it does not despise the laboratory, although the help of the laboratory, with regard to the deeper problems, is limited as compared with the results of introspective analysis. The artist does not despise experimental results; on the contrary, he regards it as a duty to gain experience; but for him the collection of experimental knowledge is merely a starting-point for self- exploration, and in art self-exploration is exploration of the world.
The psychology used in this exposition is purely philosophical, although its characteristic method, justified by the subject, is to set out from the most trivial details of experience. The task of the philosopher differs from that of the artist in one important respect. The one deals in symbols, the other in ideas. Art and philosophy stand to one another as expression to meaning. The artist has breathed in the world to breathe it out again; the philosopher has the world outside him and he has to absorb it.

In 1903 Otto Weininger, A Viennese Jew who converted to Protestantism, published Geschiecht und Charakter Sex and Character ), a book in which he set out to prove the moral inferiority and character deficiency of "the woman" and "the Jew." Almost immediately, he was acclaimed as a young genius for bringing these two elements together. Shortly thereafter, at the age of twenty-three, Weininger committed suicide in the room where Beethoven had died. Weininger's sensationalized death immortalized him as an intellectual who expressed the abject misogyny and antisemitism. This collection of essays, many translated into English for the first time, examines Weininger's influence and reception in Western culture, particularly his impact on important writers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein, Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka, and James Joyce. One essay considers the ways Weininger's ideas were used to further Nazi ideology, and several offer feminist approaches to interpreting the intersection of antisemitism and misogyny. The concluding essay explores Weininger's surprising role in Israel's ongoing sociopolitical self-definition through the bold production of Joshua Sobol's play, "The Soul of a Jew (Weininger's Last Night)."

    Note sur Otto Weininger (1880-1903)
    11.50 t.u. Mladen Schwartz
