Wittgenstein, Ludwig
Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein (1889-1951) is generally considered to be the most influential thinker in modern Anglo-American language philosophya leading, if not founding, figure in the history of ordinary-language philosophy, speech-act theory (see Speech Acts positivism"> logical positivism, and analytic linguistic philosophy and an important contributor to the philosophy of perceptual psychology and the tradition of moral realism. Although Wittgenstein's influence has been less persistent and direct in the realm of literary criticism and theory than in academic philosophy, there is a diverse and growing body of "Wittgensteinian" writing on literary issues, including certain brands of psychological and ethical criticism (e.g., Stanley Cavell), numerous writings concerning the nature of the literary "image" (W. J. T. Mitchell in Wittgenstein and Literary Theory ), "ordinary language" critiques of "theory" (W. J. T. Mitchell, ed., Against Theory; John M. Ellis in Wittgenstein and Literary Theory ), "speech act" criticism focusing on the contextual understanding of literary expression (Charles Altieri), and a small body of work concerning the relationship between rhetoric and what Wittgenstein called "forms of life" (Cavell; Henry Staten; Frank Cioffi in

Raised in a prominent Viennese family, Ludwig Wittgenstein studied engineering in Germany and England, but became interested in the foundations of mathematics and pursued philosophical studies with Moore at Cambridge before entering the Austrian army during World War I. The notebooks he kept as a soldier became the basis for his Tractatus , which later earned him a doctorate and exerted a lasting influence on the philosophers of the Vienna circle . After giving away his inherited fortune, working as a village schoolteacher in Austria, and designing his sister's Vienna home, Wittgenstein returned to Cambridge, where he developed a new conception of the philosophical task. His impassioned teaching during this period influenced a new generation of philosophers, who tried to capture it in The Blue and Brown Books (dictated 1933-35). From the late 'thirties, Wittgenstein himself began writing the materials which would be published only after his death. In the cryptic Logische-Philosophische Abhandlung Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus the earlier Wittgenstein extended Russell 's notion of logical analysis by describing a world composed of facts, pictured by thoughts

Name:
Ludwig Wittgenstein Dates:
Born: April 26, 1889 in Vienna, Austria
Died: April 29, 1951 in Cambridge, England Biography: Ludwig Wittgenstein was an Austrian philosopher whose work was instrumental in the development of logical positivism and linguistic analysis. He served in the Austrian military and saw considerable combat through World War I. In 1918 he was captured by Italian forces near Monte Cassino and sat out the rest of the conflict as a prisoner. His most famous work is probably Logische- Philosophische Abhandlung Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus ) (1922), a book based upon notes he took as a soldier and written while on a leave of absence. Wittgenstein believed that, in this work, he had solved all philosophical problems and as a result after the war he decided to abandon philosophy and went to teach at a grammar school in Austria.

Filosofia come terapia
Continuamente o a intermittenza?"

Private Language
The idea of a private language was made famous in philosophy by Ludwig Wittgenstein, who in section 243 of his book Philosophical Investigations necessarily comprehensible only to its single originator because the things which define its vocabulary are necessarily inaccessible to others. Immediately after introducing the idea, Wittgenstein goes on to argue that there cannot be such a language. The importance of drawing philosophers' attention to a largely unheard-of notion and then arguing that it is unrealizable lies in the fact that an unformulated reliance on the possibility of a private language is arguably essential to mainstream epistemology, philosophy of mind and metaphysics from Descartes to versions of the representational theory of mind which have been prominent in late twentieth century cognitive science. Section Links:
Overview: Wittgenstein's Argument and its Interpretations
Wittgenstein's main attack on the idea of a private language is contained in sections 244-271 of Philosophical Investigations The argument is quickly summarized. The conclusion is that a language in principle unintelligible to anyone but its originating user is impossible. The reason for this is that such a so-called language would, necessarily, be unintelligible to its supposed originator too, for he would be unable to establish meanings for its putative signs.
