Introduction Soon after the events of September 11, 2001, and the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, the commentary on the significance of the events started flowing. Journalists were quickly followed by experts, analysts, academics, and intellectuals. One of the first responses from a well-know public intellectual came from Slavoj Zizek . It must rate as one of the most ridiculous tracts of our time. Zizek's document is reproduced here, interposed with comments I have made. Zizek's polemic is nothing short of outrageous. A mix of witless cultural commentary, political ignorance of staggering proportions, human insensitivity, anti-American prejudice, and a pandering to the gallery of the cultural "left", an audience that functions now only to reproduce the sophistry of the old Stalinist left using "Theory" instead of party catechism. Here stands the reductio ad absurdum of the "cultural left". It leaves one wondering whether, with intellectuals like Zizek taking up so much of the stage, is there any room left for a "center left" that does not spend its time sitting in front of a screen analyzing B-grade Hollywood movies and making fatuous moralizing pronouncements about the world?
