Volume 29, Number 3 Response to Slavoj Zizek
by Geoffrey Galt Harpham Response to Slavoj Zizek Geoffrey Galt Harpham Many of the features of Zizek's thought I that tried to identifyÑrapidity, passion, high philosophical and political seriousness, a certain will to excess, and pure intellectual powerÑare in evidence here, and the stakes of his work are spelled out with admirable precision. On a personal level, too, I am grateful to Zizek for providing the bracing, once-in-a-lifetime experience of having a man I had just praised as the most formidable philosophical mind of his generation immediately denounce me as a lunatic.
I do find it difficult to grasp all parts of Zizek's response together, since much of it seems to have been composed for some other occasion. Still, its essential message is quite clear. Zizek says the following: Harpham's account of my work is filled with errors and misprisions, ranging from misstatements of plain fact to craziness, delirium, and a final madness; Harpham has gotten it all horribly, ludicrously wrong in a way that suggests he has taken temporary leave of his senses and even his identity, but if he has gotten it rightÑand "in a way, he is right"ÑI "plead guilty," "fully assume his central thesis," and even "hope" he is right, then . . . what of it? Did you think I was just "playing...games" (p. 00, 00, 00)?
So once again, I am grateful for Zizek's confirmation of my reading of his work in its broad outlines, and am more than willing to overlook smaller matters: Zizek does claim (like Lacan) that Marx "invented the symptom"; I was not opposed to NATO bombing in Kosovo; he himself gave the name "Slovene Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis"1; I fully recognize and have long asserted the deep complicity, both actual and theoretical, of democratic states in the production of human misery2; Chomsky is not especially "dear" (p. 00) to me, or even as dear as he is to Zizek3; and my conclusion represents no mere "semblance of deep thought" (p. 00) but the real thing. These are matters of little consequence, easily sorted out.

Pride versus fantasy: Zizek on Technology
Thomas P. Brockelman
In this paper, I argue that the work of Slovenian psychoanalyst and political theorist Slavoj Zizek opens a new and radical critique of technology. The paper constructs this critique by exfoliating Zizek on the way that “fundamental fantasy” constructs techno-capitalism. Through a combination of close-reading and analysis using spatial models from cosmology and perspective theory, I posit Zizek as a kind of late modernist alternative to post-modern analyses of technology. Contrasting Zizek’s technology argument with Heidegger’s, I show how his work offers a “political” alternative to the Heideggerian view. Against Hardt
and Negri (Empire), I argue that Zizek’s psychoanalytic position alone allows a cogent critique of contemporary techno-capitalism. Presenters Thomas P. Brockelman

Mark-up: Styled and linked to Zizek's sources by Andy Blunden The first public reaction to the idea of reactualizing Lenin is, of course, an outburst of sarcastic laughter: Marx Berufsverbot Habermas designated the present era as that of the neue Undurchsichtlichkeit More than ever, our daily experience is mystifying: modernization generates new obscurantisms, the reduction of freedom is presented to us as the arrival of new freedoms. In these circumstances, one should be especially careful not to confuse the ruling ideology with ideology which SEEMS to dominate. More then ever, one should bear in mind One is therefore tempted to turn around Medecins sans frontiere German Communist Party in the early 30s NOT to focus on the struggle against the Nazis As a proof, one should just look at the list of the demands at the end of the Communist Manifesto: apart from 2 or 3 of them (which, of course, are the key one), all others are today part of the consensus (at least the disintegrating Welfare State one): the universal vote, the right to free education, universal healthcare and care for the retired, limitation of child labor...

Título original "Are we in a war? Do we have an enemy?"

Slavoj Zizek (pronounced "slavoi jijek") is a professor at the Institute for Sociology, Ljubljana who uses popular culture to explain the theory of Jacques Lacan and the theory of Jacques Lacan to explain politics and popular culture. He was born in 1949 in Ljubljana, Slovenia where he lives to this day but he has lectured at universities around the world. He was analysed by Jacques Alain Miller, Jacques Lacan's son in law, and is probably the most successful and prolific post-Lacanian having published over
