De hoogtepunten van de laatste twee jaar getuigen van haar grote veelzijdigheid: Zij vertolkte de rollen van Fjodor in Boris Godunov met het Residentie Orkest onder Gennadi Rozjdestvenski, Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus met het Brabants Orkest, de mezzopartij in Kopernikus van Claude Vivier bij DNO tijdens het Holland Festival en Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana onder Eri Klas. Daarnaast zong Marion van den Akker de Alt-Rapsodie van Brahms, de Anne Frank Cantate van Hans Kox, de Cante Jondo van J. Lambrechts en de rol van Nefertite uit de Opera Achnaten van Ph. Glass met als dirigenten resp. A. liebreich, E. Spanjaard , Muhai Tang en Neal Stulberg. Aktief als lerares verzorgde zij nog masterclasses over de liederencycli van Schumann en gaf zij lezingen over het oeuvre van de Canadese componist Claude Vivier en de russische componiste Sofia Gubaidulina. De Nederlandse mezzo-sopraan Marion van den Akker studeerde cum-laude af aan het Sweelinck Conservatorium bij Erna Spoorenberg. Een beurs stelde haar in staat meestercursussen te volgen bij Udo Reinemann, Henk Smit, Nicolai Gedda en Brigitte Fassbaender, Italo Tajo, en Josephine Veasey

, Op. 66 Lerchenmusik , Op. 53* Reinbert de Leeuw, piano Schonberg Ensemble/Reinbert de Leeuw * Larissa Groeneveld, cello * Harmen de Boer, clarinet Philips Classics 442533-2 DDD 66:48 These two works have been recorded on separate Nonesuch CDs: Kleines Requiem for eine Polka on 79362-2 (coupled with the Harpsichord Concerto and Good Night ) and Lerchenmusik on 79257-2 (coupled with the First String Quartet, "Already it is Dusk"). The earlier performances are by members of the London Sinfonietta, conducted by David Zinman in the former work. If you already have them, there is no need to replace the Nonesuch discs, but first-time buyers might well prefer the de Leeuw disc. First of all, it combines the strongest works from each of the two Nonesuch releases. Secondly, de Leeuw and the Schonberg Ensemble commissioned Kleines Requiem Lerchenmusik , which de Leeuw, de Boer, and Groeneveld take almost 17% more slowly. As for the music itself, the more I hear these works, the more I respect them. The composer referred to Kleines Requiem as "circus music," but it really is a very serious work, even when it's bitterly flippant, as in the third movement.

HIS LIFE Down Up Top Links Alfred Erik Leslie Satie was born in Honfleur (Normandy) in 1866. He died in Paris in 1925, aged 59. He came of musical parents, both his mother (Scottish) and his father were composers. Satie started playing the piano at age 7. At 17 he spent a year at the Paris Conservatory. At age 40, already an accomplished musician, he entered the Schola Cantorum. Here he studied counterpoint and orchestration with Albert Roussel and Vincent D'Indy . After three years he received a Diploma marked "tres bien" (very good). Satie was a composer who feared no man, but always did what was right in his own eyes. He was an exponent of several important trends in the 20th Century composition including bitonality, polytonality, Jazz and non-triadic harmony. Erik Satie was one of music's great originals , both personally (an eccentric) and artistically.

NEXT UP TOP NEW MUSIC in the Bay Area By Charles Amirkhanian During KPFA's first decade on the air (the 1950's), the lively post-World War II avantgarde music scene here centered around an organization known as the Composers' Forum. With the burning issue of the day being the tug of war between the Stravinskyans (represented figuratively by Darius Milhaud, teaching at Mills College) and the Schoenbergians (Roger Sessions at U.C. Berkeley), the Forum provided a meeting ground for younger composers to hash out their theories and premiere their latest works. Indeed, several composers including Leon Kirchner, Jerome Rosen, Leland Smith and Laurence Clarke, studied with both Milhaud and Sessions. This month, during the San Francisco Symphony's salute to Roger Sessions, KPFA joins the Old First Church in San Francisco in remembering the days of the Composers' Forum. Some of the composers active in the early days of the Forum were Andrew Imbrie, Roger Nixon, William Denny, Charles Cushing, Jonathon Elkus, Earl Kim, Leonard Rosenman, William O. Smith and the aforementioned Kirchner, Rosen and Smith. Performers included the California and Griller String Quartets, soprano Dorothy Renzi, pianists Bernhard Abramowitsch and Nathan Schwartz, violinist Nathan Rubin, baritone Edgar Jones, cellist Bonnie Hampton, organist Lawrence Moe, and founder-organizer Lawrence Moe, and founder-organizer Jane Hohfeld Galante.
