The Principles of Human Knowledge George Berkeley, trained in philosophy at Trinity College Dublin, continues the tradition of the Cambridge Platonists and the 4th Earl of Shaftsbury, who find the mechanical philosophy of Descartes, Gassendi, Locke, Boyle and Newton as dangerous as the complete materialism of Hobbes and Spinoza. Berkeley raises many problems for this materialist tradition. He attacks the doctrine of abstract ideas; he makes great use of the implications of the representative theory of perception; and he gives strong arguments against the distinction between primary and secondary qualities. Berkeley calls his alternative to the views he criticizes immaterialism. It is the doctrine that to be is to perceive or to be perceived. The universe, thus, has only two kinds of entities in it, spirits (which perceive) and ideas (which are perceived).     Extractions: Consciousness and Berkeley's Metaphysics by Peter B. Lloyd Modern science has no explanation for consciousness. In this book, the author claims that this is because the conscious mind is simply not physical. To understand consciousness, we must therefore go beyond physical science and into metaphysics. Rigorous philosophical arguments are given by the author to show that the metaphysical theory called 'mental monism' provides the only correct understanding of consciousness. Mental monism turns conventional wisdom on its head. According to this theory, consciousness itself is the primary reality, and the physical world is a derived construct - a convenient fiction that helps us to deal with our experiences of the world. Although this theory may seem paradoxical at first, compelling arguments are given by the author to establish that this is the correct view. The theory of mental monism was first given a clear statement in Western philosophy by George Berkeley, an eighteenth-century Irish philosopher. Berkeley put forward mental monism as a reaction to the rising tide of mechanistic Newtonian metaphysics, which had gained popularity by riding on the back of the scientific revolution. The stranglehold of materialism has lasted three hundred years, but there is now a growing awareness of the inability of physical science to address the problem of consciousness. Burgeoning interest in consciousness studies makes this an ideal time to revisit mental monism and reassess its value.

    Extractions: Berkeley, George (16851753) Berkeley was born in Ireland and attended Kilkenny College and Trinity College in Dublin. At a young age he was influenced by the writings of Descartes and Newton After working at Trinity, he traveled around Europe for eight years. In 1721, he wrote De motu , which rejected Newton's physics. Later he traveled to the Americas, establishing a college in Bermuda and eventually living in Newport, Rhode Island. He returned to Dublin and was made an Anglican bishop. Berkeley's major contribution was The Analyst or a Discourse Addressed to an Infidel Mathematician The infidel mathematician term referred to Halley. This book attacked the poor foundation of calculus and made fun of higher order derivatives. It questioned both Newton's fluxions and Leibniz's differentials. As a result, i t made mathematicians work harder to justify and explain their results. Major publications: De motu, The Analys t Quotation: "The method of fluxions (differential calculus) is the general key by help whereof the modern mathematicians unlock the secrets of geometry, and consequently of nature."
