Martin Buber, My Way to Hasidism [1] MORDECAI MARTIN BUBER, THE FOREMOST OF MODERN Jewish thinkers known to the world at large, was born in Vienna in 1878. At the age of three, when his mother disappeared without a trace, he was sent to live with his grandparents in Lvov, where he and his grandfather, Solomon Buber, a scholar of the Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment, prayed with the hasidim. At eighteen Buber entered the University of Vienna where he became interested in religion, especially Christian mysticism; Buber's doctoral dissertation, "From the Problem of Individuation: Cusanus and Boehme," focused on Cusanus, a Catholic Cardinal and mathematician who, like the mystic Boehme, revealed the limitations of reason. Also in these early years Buber's driving interest was Zionism. He had a close working relation with Chaim Weitzman and his Paths in Utopia [2] reflects his continuing positive view of Kibbutz socialism.

    Extractions: Der jüdische Religionsphilosoph wurde am 8. Februar in Wien geboren und wuchs bei seinem Großvater, einem bekannten Gelehrten, in Lemberg auf. Nach einem Studium der Philosophie und Kunstgeschichte widmete er sich dem Chassidismus und erschloß damit der westlichen Welt diese ostjüdische Lebens- und Frömmigkeitsform. Ab lehrte er jüdische Religionswissenschaft und Ethik an der Universität Frankfurt. Außerdem war er in der jüdischen Erwachsenenbildung und als Herausgeber von Zeitschriften tätig. Sein Buch "Ich und Du" ( ), mit dem er großen Einfluß auch auf christliche Kreise hatte, entwickelte das "dialogische Prinzip", das für ihn die Grundlage menschlichen Zusammenlebens und der Beziehung zu Gott ist.

The grandson of the noted Talmud and Midrash scholar, Solomon Buber, Martin Buber was deeply stirred by the religious message of Hasidism and considered it his duty to convey that message to the world. He wrote several books on Hasidism including collections of Hasidic tales. He was very concerned about Jewish education in Germany and, together with Franz Rosenzweig he translated the Bible into German. During the early Nazi period (193338) Buber traveled throughout Germany lecturing, teaching and encouraging his fellow Jews, and thus organized something of a spiritual resistance to the oppressions which were beginning. In 1938 he settled in Palestine and was appointed professor of social philosophy at the Hebrew University, where he taught until his retirement in 1951. In his later years Buber remained very active in public affairs and in Jewish cultural endeavors. He was one of the founders of the College for Adult Education Teachers, established to train teachers from among the new immigrants who came to Israel. He was the first president of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. After World War II Buber lectured extensively outside Israel and became known throughout the world as one of the spiritual leaders of his generation.

Si les théologiens chrétiens reconnaissent en Buber l'interprète privilégié du judaïsme, de nombreux Juifs - dont l'éminent penseur Gershom Scholem - lui reprochent d'être un anarchiste religieux, tandis que les Juifs libéraux le considèrent comme le principal porte-parole du judaïsme contemporain. Certains soutiennent que l'enseignement de Buber «se cantonne dans des hauteurs éthérées», que son mysticisme est réservé à un cercle limité de disciples et d'érudits, que sa pensée n'a pas de rapport avec notre monde pragmatique. Buber se serait assurément opposé à ce que l'on considère son oeuvre comme une admirable pièce de musée. XVIII, por obra de Israel ben Eliezer (Ba'al Shem Tob, «el Rabbí del buen nombre», m. 1760). De 1896 a 1900 estudió Filosofía e Historia del Arte en las Univ. de Viena, Berlín (con G. Simmel y W. Dilthey), Leipzig y Zurich. Activo sionista, desde 1901 dirigió en Viena el periódico Die Welt
