Mas Foucault descontrói esse pensamento e formula uma nova e desconcertante hipótese, mostrando a seus leitores que ainda que certas explicações funcionem, elas não podem ser encaradas como as únicas verdadeiras, pois, segundo ele, a verdade nada mais é do que uma mentira que não pode contestada em um determinado momento. Extractions: Foucault, Michel (1926-1984), French philosopher, who attempted to show that the basic ideas which people normally take to be permanent truths about human nature and society change in the course of history. His studies challenged the influence of German political philosopher Karl Marx and Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Foucault offered new concepts that challenged people's assumptions about prisons, the police, insurance, care of the mentally ill, gay rights, and welfare. Foucault was born in Poitiers. He studied philosophy and psychology at the elite École Normale Supérieure in Paris. During the 1960s, he served as head of the philosophy departments at the University of Clermont-Ferrand and the University of Vincennes (officially known as the Vincennes Experimental University Centre). In 1970 he was elected to the highest academic post in France, the College de France, where he took the title of Professor of the History of Systems of Thought. Extractions: Michel Foucault rejected many of the common assumptions made about human nature and human science, examining instead how the concepts of human nature and science have functioned in society. Foucault did not believe that there existed any sort of "universal position" from which humanity or nature could be examined and studied. Every analysis is, rather, fixed firmly in its socio-historical context. There is not even a universal "reason" which can analyze a problem or situation. Instead, there is a multiplicity of "reasons" which people use, none of which is superior or preferable to any other. One of Foucault's interests was the relationship between language and power. According to Foucault, every institution controls the sort of language used to discuss it and, thereby, essentially controls the course and outcome of that discussion. Power and language are intimately connected, where those who have the power are in control of the language we use and, hence, the very concepts we employ to organize sensory data and make sense of our world.
