La domanda rischia di suonare blasfema, visto che si sta parlando di una delle grandi icone della sinistra e dell'antifascismo italiano, non solo mai messa in discussione, ma addirittura inserita dal segretario di Alleanza Nazionale Gianfranco FINI e da alcuni intellettuali come Marcello Veneziani nel novero delle figure di riferimento del "nuovo" partito della destra. Ma è possibile che nella generale condanna di tutto ciò che è stato comunista, in un momento in cui un'altra icona della sinistra, Palmiro Togliatti, è costantemente messo sotto accusa per i suoi ambigui rapporti con Mosca, colui che è stato uno dei fondatori del Partito Comunista Italiano ne esca ancora indenne? Tra le molte rievocazioni dell'opera di questo comunque importante autore cerchiamo di capire se il suo pensiero, soprattutto quello politico, possa essere ancora attuale anche oggi. E' difficile dare una risposta a questo quesito. Va però fatta subito una netta distinzione tra l'uomo Gramsci e la sua sofferenza nelle carceri di Mussolini (si leggano certe commoventi lettere dal carcere), che ne fanno un punto di riferimento dell'antifascismo e il suo pensiero marxista. Se, e lo vedremo, la sua opera "politologica" sente il peso degli anni, il suo esempio di martire del fascismo rimane tuttora valido.

Mais alors que son premier secrétaire général, Amedeo Bordiga, l'organise d'une manière centralisée et hiérarchisée, Gramsci est pour un parti décentralisé des "soviets", des "conseils d'usines". En marxiste orthodoxe Gramsci ne peut concevoir l'Etre humain en dehors de l'action de transformation qu'il accomplit par le travail sur la nature. C'est la praxis (l'action dialectique de la théorie et de la pratique) qui fait du marxisme la "catharsis" (purification) qui réalise l'unité entre les contraires que sont le Matérialisme d'avant Marx d'une part et l'Idéalisme d'autre part. En Occident c'est la praxis qui permettra le contrôle du Pouvoir culturel, sans lequel il ne peut y avoir de consensus au sein de l'Etat. L'Etat est composé d'appareils à dominante répressive, la "société politique", c'est-à-dire l'Etat au sens étroit du terme - comprenant les forces de coercition physique (l'armée, la police, la justice) et des organes de formation du droit (la bureaucratie, le parlement, le gouvernement) - appareils par lesquels la classe sociale au Pouvoir assure sa domination. Mais l'Etat est également composé d'appareils à dominante idéologique, la "société civile" - comprenant les forces culturelles (l'Université, l'Eglise, les intellectuels et artistes, les media) - par lesquels la classe sociale au Pouvoir essaie d'obtenir l'adhésion, le consentement, le consensus.

Born at Ales in Cagliary, Italy. Antonio was the fourth son of Francesco Gramsci, a clerk in the local registrar's office. 1897-1898 His father is sentenced to serve five years in prison on charges of maladministration. On his release he has no job, so his seven children grow up in difficult circumstances and deep financial insecurity. Antonio G. suffered ill health throughout his life, and from a deformity which left him a hunchback. 1903 After completing his elementary education, Gramsci has to work in the registry office of Ghilarza, Italy, where the family moved after his father's imprisonment. 1911 Gramsci wins a scholarship to study at Turin University.
