Rawls is considered by many to be the most important political philosopher of the 20th century and a powerful advocate of the liberal perspective. His work continues to be a major influence in the fields of ethics, law, political science, and economics, and has been translated into 27 languages. Harvard University President Lawrence H. Summers said, "I am deeply saddened by the death of John Rawls. He combined profound wisdom with equally profound humanity. Few if any modern philosophers have had as decisive an impact on how we think about justice. Scholars in many different fields will continue to learn from him for generations to come."

Extractions: JUL The idea of the original position is perhaps the most lasting contribution of John Rawls to our theorizing about social justice. The original position is a hypothetical situation in which rational calculators, acting as agents or trustees for the interests of concrete individuals, are pictured as choosing those principles of social relations under which their principals would do best. Their choices are subject to certain constraints, however, and it is these constraints which embody the specifically moral elements of original position argumentation. Crudely, the rational calculators do not know facts about their principals which would be morally irrelevant to the choice of principles of justice. This restriction on their reasoning is embodied, picturesquely, in Rawls's so-called veil of ignorance There are epistemological and political interpretations of the original position.

Extractions: This is a political summary of the defects of John Rawls' contractarian liberalism. Rawls Theory of Justice (1971) is the most influential normative work of political philosophy of the last two generations. In 1993 it was followed by a broader work on Political Liberalism. Rawls later work claims that his concerns are not metaphysical, but political: a stable and workable society in the western liberal tradition. In reality, all his work is a justification of liberal societies against others. Worse, it is a justification of the inequality and injustice in those societies, and a model for a conservative future. Rawls died on 24 November 2002. Last update 11 January 2003. The form of social contract described by John Rawls in A Theory of Justice can be called the 'fictive assembly' type. In another 1970's version, by Bruce Ackerman, the assembly is more explicit - the inhabitants of a planet draw up a social contract on a spaceship ( Social justice in the Liberal State New Haven: Yale University Press, 1980). In both cases, the social contract is the contract which would be confirmed by the entire population, under ideal conditions, after perfect and complete consideration.

He taught at Princeton (1950-52), Cornell (1953-59), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming (1962) professor of philosophy at Harvard. Rawls's chief work is A Theory of Justice (1971), in which he attempts, within the social contract tradition of John Locke, Jean Jacques Rousseau, and Immanuel Kant, to offer an alternative to utilitarian political philosophy. His system is developed from two basic principles: Each person has a right to the most extensive basic liberty compatible with like liberty for others; and inequalities in the distribution of wealth and power are just only when they can be reasonably expected to work to the advantage of those who are worst off. For Rawls, justice does not require equality in social position, but it does require that men share one another's fate. By providing the social contract tradition with a formidable philosophic defense, Rawls's book revived interest in systematic political theory. See bibliography by David T. Mason and J. H. Wellbank (1982); study by Robert P. Wolff (1977).

Desde la publicación de su obra maestra "Una teoría de la Justicia" (1971) se fueron sucediendo oleadas de apoyo y crítica a sus postulados. Después de la denominada Crisis de los paradigmas, la filosofía o teoría política padeció un receso tal que parecía anunciar su desaparición del ámbito del debate teórico. A esta situación contribuyó, en no menor medida, la dominación de las teorías utilitaristas en el estudio político y social con un carácter teleológico por un lado así como consecuencialista por el otro. Además, el utilitarismo presenta un atractivo inherente a su utópico devenir, no sólo toma como punto de referencia a individuos reales de carne y hueso en las decisiones entorno a conflictos sociales, sino que también aparenta basarse en la idea de igualdad al tomar a todos los actores prima facie como iguales. Así, la obra de John Rawls aparece como una inminente respuesta al utilitarismo reinante. Es una vehemente y veraz crítica a la falsedad detrás de los apelativos utilitaristas que no necesariamente resultan éticamente correctos y que mientras apelan al principio de mayorías, dejan fuera a muchos agencies sociales (las minorías por ejemplo) lo cual es contraintuitivo en las democracias liberales modernas caracterizadas por el pluralismo y, peor aún, es un acto plagado de injusticia.
