Advaita Vedanta In the Sankrit language Advaita means "not two" and Vedanta means "the end of knowledge". So one could say that Advaita Vedanta is the non-dual experience at the end of knowledge, or beyond knowledge. However, in the non-dual state there can be no experiencer and experience and so the term arises, "The Mystery beyond the mind," simply because that That that is beyond the mind cannot be conceptualized much less described by the mind. This mystery refers to the cessation of the experience of duality, the removal of separation between any two objects, the lifting of the veil of illusoryness, the drowning of individualness in the eternal ocean of Love. This Mystery is the Majesty of Saints like Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi of Tiruvannamalai, his disciple Sri H.W.L. Poonja of Lucknow, Ananda Mayi Ma of Haridwar, and Sri Nisargadatta of Bombay. By their words, their touch, their look, and mostly just by their presence these Saints enlighten their disciples. Enlighten is a word that is a gossomer vessel overflowing with sticky concepts. For lack of a better word it is used but realize that any word, any concept, and any Saint is a finger pointing to Advaita Vedanta, the Mystery Beyond the Mind.

Advaita Vedanta
Advaita Vedanta was founded by Shankaracharya , one of the most important philosophers in India, and possibly in the world, who is said to have lived during the 8th century AD. Advaita (non-dualistic) Vedanta expounds that our real self ( Atman in Sanskrit) and the Universal, Transcendental Self ( Brahman in Sanskrit) is one and the same. There can be no more simplistic philosophical model of the world than this absolute "monism".

Arsha Vidya Gurukulam is an institute for the traditional study of Advaita Vedanta, Yoga, Values, Ayurveda, Astrology, Sanskrit and other classical Indian studies. The word Arsha means that which is from the Rishis - the great seers of ancient India. The word Vidya means knowledge. Thus, Arsha Vidya means the knowledge flowing from the Rishis. The word Gurukulam refers to a residential center for learning with the Teacher. Arsha Vidya Gurukulam offers Indians and Westerners alike an opportunity to study the profound spiritual knowledge of the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Brahma-sutras, and other classical Vedic texts in English in the USA. Established in 1986 by Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati , the Gurukulam is patterned after the ancient gurukulas of India. The Gurukulam is located amidst a serene setting in the Pocono Mountains, at Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. The campus is adorned by a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Dakshinamurti, who is considered the first teacher of the Vedic knowledge. The Gurukulam offers short and long term programs of study for guest and resident students of all ages. Apart from Vedanta, classes are offered on Sanskrit,Vedic Chanting, Vedic Astrology, Ayurveda, Meditation and Iyengar Yoga. There are

The Dangers of Pseudo-advaita

Although not always thought so as such, Advaita actually falls under the auspices of the three main branches of VEDANTA:
  • Dvaita Vedanta - the dualistic approach
  • Advaita Vedanta - the non-dualistic approach
  • Kevala Advaita Vedanta - the pure non-dualistic school. The main exponent of Vedanta was the great sage Adi Sankara who was an adept of the Kevala Advaita Vedanta path. In western circles it is not unusual to blend the last two together as well as interposing the words Advaita and Vedanta as having the same meaning, becoming in a sense euphemisms of themselves ("satsang" is often included as well). Generally speaking it works OK, but when fine tuning the specifics then a more indepth process is usually required. (source)
    Jerry Katz
, in a further clarification, in his Nonduality FAQ website, presents the following as well:
Advaita means nonduality. Vedanta means "end of the Veda." The Vedas, the most ancient texts of Indian literature, are books on mythology and sacrifice. Their origins are superhuman, their authority divine, the Orthodox believe. The end of the Veda marked the coming of the Upanishads, which are books on the nondual nature of reality, but which offer different levels of nondual understanding, and have even given rise dualism, which says that God and the human body are eternally separate. Providing the Introduction:
    the Wanderling
The Dangers of Pseudo Advaita now proceeds:
We would like to express our concern regarding the recent phenomenon of 'satsang-culture' which in our opinion has impoverished seriously the Orignial Spirit of Advaita. These days many individuals, who have very little or no knowledge at all about the Process of Awakening, feel qualified to give satsang and lead other souls on the Path. Enlightenment has become very cheap these days. Nobody actually really knows what is the meaning of this term as it virtually means everything and nothing. Nowadays, it is sufficient to say 'I am Awakened' in order to give satsang.

    The Starting Point
Every human being is unhappy. He is discontented. We all feel that something is missing. We want more. No matter how much we possess, it is never enough. We are afraid to die. We want to live longer, be healthier, look younger and accumulate more wealth. We want to increase our knowledge and awareness. We want to experience more joy and happiness. All these lead to unbearable restlessness. Why? The answer lies in the three statements comprising the wonderful formulae given to us by Sri Sankaracharya, the exponent (explainer and clarifier) of advaita vedanta. "Brahma Satyam
    Jagan Mithya
    Jivo Brahmaiva Na Parah"
which translates roughly as follows: "God alone is real

    Sat-Chit-Ananda Brahman
Although Brahman is beyond description, the Rishis (seers or sages) of yore declared, based on their personal experience, that it can best be described as sat-chit-ananda.
Sat means existence pure and absolute.
Chit means knowledge, or consciousness, pure and absolute.
Ananda means bliss, pure and absolute. Our true nature is pure existence, knowledge and bliss. Deeply we know it and because of this we cannot settle for being mortal and experiencing any type of limitation to our existence, we have an infinite thirst for knowledge and constant yearning to experience joy. Yoga is looking for happiness in the Self, the atman, instead of outside ourselves, in the sense objects.
A man, let us call him Bob, walks at night on a dark path. All of a sudden, a snake bites him on the leg. The snake is lying on the ground just a few feet from him. Lying on the floor, he weeps because of the pain and knowing that his life is most likely over. He can feel the poison traveling in his bloodstream and he cries for help.
